Green chemistry in paint : Developing sustainable and natural ingredients for water-based paint on buses

Advancements of ingredients used in paints
Beeswax

Beeswax is a natural and renewable product

Linseed oil

Linseed oil is sustainable and biodegradable finishing oil.

Since beeswax is a by-product of honey production , the bees excess honey in wax honeycombs would be taken by the beekeepers without affecting the colony.

How is it renewable

Linseed oil has no harmful chemicals that damage and challenge the environment as

it does not release environmentally hazardous items . Unlike most of the finishing oils , linseed oil does not release heavy metals which are not safe for the environment.

NATURAL PIGMENTS
It contains synthetic pigments derived from petrochemicals / heavy metals .

CHEMISTRY CONCEPTS INVOLVED IN GREEN PAINT FORMULATION
Cross linking

It creates a strong bond between polymers chains which improves the durability and performance of the paint film . It utilizes crosslinking reactions to enhance the properties of water-based paint ensuring adhesion , flexibility and resistance o wear and weather .

Surfactants

It reduces the surface tension of liquid which allow them to spread evenly . Surfactants also help with pigment dispersion , wetting the substrate and improving the overall application properties of the paint .

Environment impact
From using oil based paints for buses , they changed it to water based paints which significantly reduce the amount of VOC emissions
Improved air quality in urban areas as the use of water based paint on buses has led a substantial reduction in VOC emissions
Performance and durability
Water-based paints have demonstrated superior performance in terms of adhesion , color retention , resistance to weather and abrasion

OUR FUTURE

WHAT WILL THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE PAINT PRODUCTION IMPACT ?

Environment
Bus manufacturers
Paint industry
Using paint bound with natural or semi-natural ingredients, such as plant-based , generally has a much lower carbon footprint than that of many recognizable brands which makes them the most sustainable type of paints available
Many green paints are formulated to be highly durable and long-lasting, which means they can save you money on maintenance and repainting in the long run.
With all the buses and other vehicles wanting green paint , the paint industries will gain a lot of income , as green paint takes less time and is easy to make , which in turns allow them to produce more green paint . Hence , they can use it to gain more income .
Singapore has buses everywhere and most of the people takes bus , so by using sustainable paint , it reduces environmental impact . As green paint is made with environmentally responsible materials and processes, which means it has a lower impact on the environment than normal paint .
The cost of sustainable paint depends on the specific product and the brand, but sustainable paint tends to be more expensive than normal paint. However, the higher initial cost of green paint may be offset by the long-term cost savings associated with its improved performance and durability. Additionally, using sustainable paint can help reduce the environmental impacts of painting, which may have additional financial benefits.
